I often find that when I start noticing the purse string getting pulled tighter that a home-made card will do just as well as any gift. But, I have all of the stuff stored away for it...stamps, sparkled, doo-dahs, and coloring items that make it fun.
I hope you can turn off those commercials and escape, even for a little of, the consumerism of the holidays.

I often get caught up in the moment of consumerism around Christmas too. I have found that turning off the TV and staying out of the big shopping malls has really helped me these last few years. I also LOVE to buy people things and surprise them but I dont' want things to just become more stuff. I also truely believe that little kids are more brainwashed by their parents and other adults in their lives (until they get to upper elem. and middle school) and so therefore if you don't fall prey to the consumerism, neither will they. It's all what we teach them, right? Why not give them the gift of an experience, like a day with you at the zoo. Or something homemade and fun? Little kids just love to open things, it doesn't matter what it is. ah... the joys of not having money. It makes us get more creative!
